And then mound mulch up way too high around the base. The crown of the root system should be visible. We have a bloodgood maple in front of our house and it's looking pretty bad right now. All dark brown-ish and crunchy leaves. You need to over mulch them in the winter to survive and even that may not guarantee anything. Tu...We had a rhododendron that died after 4 years. Turns out, it was root bound and we didn't notice until we pulled it up. That's the problem with slow growing plants. <br /><br />Mums often only last a few years, so I doubt you did anything wrong.<br /><br />I love, love, LOVE your mixture of flowers.
