Free pedestal table

Not for you, but for us.  We were given a solid oak pedestal table from Shaun's parents.  His mom gleefully gave it to us in exchange for her husband's ok to get a brand new set.  Of course, I had plans for this table!
While the IKEA set in our dining room has served me well for many years, it just didn't fit the style of our house and I was totally over the light birch finish.
The top of this table has an awesome wood grain pattern, that I couldn't possibly cover with paint.
So, I chose to do a stain/paint combo with a dark stained top and white painted pedestal and apron.  I'm hoping it will turn out like Caroline @ The Feminist Housewife's table!
Don't you love this?  And of course I will be painting some awesome chairs (not the ones that came with this table!) to match the white base...but that is a story for another day because it includes sort of a rant and I just don't have time at 11pm, ok??  Oh yeah, this table does have one leaf that makes it comfortable for about 6 or 7 people.
So, I started sanding that first in case I messed up.  Never know, right?  I could always just say I lost it and no one would know.  Except they would know that I'm an idiot that loses huge parts of tables.  That's better than being a bad sander, though.
You know I was thinking about this post from Kasey while I was doing this!  Luckily this table is hard oak and I didn't have to worry too much about swirl marks and uneven sanding.  At least I hope so!  I started with 60 grit and then did a round with 150.  I'm still not sure whether I will do 220 or call it good.  The non-leaf parts of the table were much harder to sand....but after a few hour-long sanding sessions, I had a message for the table.
Let's hope I'm still the winner when I start the staining process!

  1. Awesome! That's going to look so great! I would definitely do a once over with 220, but it shouldn't take long to do that. And staining is fun! I can't wait to see it finished!

  10. I was so relieved to see that you were going to stain the top. I love painted furniture, but sometimes I think people go a bit far with it and cover up some really awesome wood. But you do have my blessing to paint the base white (I know you were waiting for it). It's going to look frakkin awesome!
