The wedding dress

Is it shocking to post my wedding dress on the blog?  Not for me.  Shaun has seen me in it, and it's no secret to any of my friends and family that I was going for a retro 50s-style dress.  I ordered the Edmonton in Ivory from Dolly Couture, and I'm thrilled with the dress!  After a scary initial try-on where I wasn't able to zip it, I'm happy to say after a month of hard gym work it is now a bit loose.  Forgive the grainy, nighttime, super-zoomed pics...here it is:
As you can see, I have yet to figure out how to use my camera timer and tripod....but who cares, you get the idea!  The shoes are Bordello by Pleaser Violette 06.  Unfortunately, they only carry whole sizes and the 8's I got from Endless were falling off my feet.
I'm not sure if I love them, so the jury is still out on returning them and getting a 7 in this same pair (they are quite comfy despite being too big), or a competely different pair.  I do love the retro look and fun toe detail - plus they are only a 3.5 inch heel, lower than most evening shoes.
What do you think?  Would you ever order a wedding dress online without trying it on first?

  1. LOVE it gorgeous girl! One step closer to the alter!

I would totally return the shoes and get something that fits perfectly. I bought these hot Steve Madden shoes for our wedding, then realized the morning of that they weren't going to be super comfy all day and at the last minute I borrowed a pair from my BFF.

  2. How beautiful and totally you. Glad to hear you are keeping your wedding at you like it, not what others want. I really like the red shoes, but there are others out there if these really don't fit. You can always get some red velvet slippers to sink your feet into as well.

  3. you're adorable! i love the retro look! and yes. i would. since i did order my dress from Nordstrom, but i had a great return policy so i wasn't worried. {i really really wanted a short dress but the hubs hated the idea so i figured i cared about what he thought on our wedding day! :)

  4. GORGEOUS. I love the shoes, too, but I'm on team find some that fit--you don't want to be worrying about them falling off or pinching while you're celebrating.

  5. Looking good! The shoes are great too, but I'd go for comfort so the fit is a bit of a bummer.

  6. You look hot :-) I'd return the shoes and buy something that fits. And I like thought of red shoes--my sister did that at her wedding, wish I had thought of it for mine!

  7. I'm definitely not keeping the too-big shoes, but I'm just not sure whether to get the smaller size of these same ones, or find something else fabulous!

  9. Yep, I ordered my dress online without ever seeing it in person. I lucked out - it fit perfectly! No alterations needed. your dress is so you! Looks great. :)

  10. you look great! and i love the red shoes. my heels were comfy, until i wore them while doing pics, through the ceremony and the start of the reception. i took them off immediately after the first dance. soooooo, while i recommend comfy shoes, if you do decide to keep these that aren't that your size, you'll probably be taking them off anyway (bring flip flops or ballets flats).

  12. I am a sucker for retro. You are pure perfection! Are you going to do a birdcage veil?

I think the shoes are adorable, but the real question is, how comfy will they be one size down? You'll be exchanging vows, taking photos and then dancing the night away, so you'll really need soft and supportive heels to get you through all that standing. If they're the perfect width and padding, I'd say go for the smaller size! They're totally gorgeous.

  15. that dress TOTALLY rocks and you look so at home in it! Obvs I don't know you IRL but it seems to suit your personality!

    Love it!

  16. I LOVE YOUR DRESS! It fits your (from what I can tell from blog stalking you) personality so well!

The shoes: I know endless has a great return policy, so I say get the 7's, but still shop around (keep them in the box so they don't get scuffed). Endless has a pretty long return policy right? You can keep browsing as long as you want! :) What a perfect excuse for longer shoe shopping :)

  17. awesome dress! I ordered my wedding dress online (unfortunately I did't get to wear that dress but that's another story) and my husband saw me several times in it before we got married.

  18. That looks gorgeous on you! How fun. :o)

I L-O-V-E those shoes. I am such a sucker for bright colored shoes with a crisp, white dress!

  19. That dress is fantastic! I vote to go for the shoes, they are great!

  20. So pretty! The shoes are adorable too. Love them! Buying a wedding dress online without seeing it is kind of like buying furniture without sitting on it. I do the latter all the time but I think you were even braver to try the former!

  21. Sara, as a bride-to-be myself, I have a request: please post more wedding posts! You look adorable in the dress and I have to say, ordering online...maybe not so uncommon anymore. I'm currently awaiting dress #2 in the mail (I of course made sure I could return them without restocking fees before ordering).

My dress woes are endless but it still pleases me to no end that you found your dress! Congratulations!

  24. Oh my goodness, so beautiful! Excellent choice. I'm envious of the ease in which you found it! I tried on every dress in my state, and didn't enjoy it because I was so worried I wasn't going to find a dress!

I love the shoes, and there's probably no harm in exchanging them for 7's first right? Just to see? Then if they still don't fit, keep on looking!

  25. You look great in that dress! It's so fun and those shoes are just wow... im drooling over them!

  27. I love the shoes! When shoes are just a little too big, you can buy a pad to put at the heel to make them feel more snug.

    Pretty, pretty!

  28. Oh Sara, It's lovely. And I love the shoes! I didn't order my dress online - I wanted to do the more traditional going shopping with Mom, but I looked at enough of them online! And I order ALOT more clothes online than getting them from the mall!
I know you're getting excited. I can't wait to see pics of the big day!

  29. LOVE you in the dress!! I actually bought my wedding shoes (orange ed hardy flats) offline without trying them on. They were great for the ceremony, but I took them off for the reception because I hadn't had a chance to "break them in" yet.

  30. You look so pretty, Sara! I love the whole look. The red shoes are great. A pair that fits will be gorgeous!

  31. Looks SO great! I love the styling and the length is perfect.

I wouldn't worry about the shoes - I feel like you can definitely find another pair that are just as cute that fit and are comfy and fabulous!!

Good work on the gym stuff :-)

  32. Oh, I totally bought my dress online without trying it first... though it was $300 from J Crew. :-)

  33. Not only did I order a dress online, I ordered a final sale sample from England. Bummer was that when I received it, though it fit, it was the WRONG dress! They let me return it, lucky me. Ended up with the dress I thought I had ordered, but not at the last-one-left, clearance price.

Regarding the shoes, bigger isn't necessarily a bad thing. Your feet will swell as you mingle, dance and host the day/night away. You might be very happy you have bigger shoes by the end of the day. Congratulations, and good luck finding the right shoes for you!

  34. Oh my gosh... I LOVE those shoes!! They are so adorable and look so awesome on you! =] I wore green shoes in my wedding and I definitely have a thing for colored shoes now.

  37. Gorgeous dress, love the shoes!

I bought my dress online from JCrew when they were just getting in to wedding dresses. It was a very simple knee length, sleeveless dress (we had a very laid back ceremony) and its the only dress I tried on. Loved it, and the price ($100!).

  38. Very Pretty!

I found my dress online and the store was nearby - so I tired it on and fell inlove :) Plus my gf's all cried so I knew it was the one!!

I love your choice in shoes :) I also went with color!! Mine were purple, but I also bought a red pair too - lol - I ended up wearing the purple! Congrats on your upcoming weeding

  40. Oh my god! You look gorgeous- that dress is to die for. Seriously so pretty. I love the retro look and the length is perfect! I don't know if I could commit to a dress without trying it on first... I have a hard time commiting to throw pillows without seeing them first!

  41. Oh la la! You look amazing, Sara! Your dress is fab!

  42. Yay! I love it all!!

I bought my dress online without trying on any wedding dresses ever... and there was a no refund policy. Thankfully it worked out :).

  43. You are totally adorable. I wish I wore a short dress for my wedding and kept things less formal.

  44. Love the dress and shoes! If you return the shoes you should consider blue...it could be your "something blue"!

  45. You are one hott mama. Psst- my dress is short too! I've been waiting for some wedding talk from you! I love the shoes- I'd say to get those ones in a smaller size. And YIKES if 3.5" is short... I'm in need of some serious heel-walking practice.

  46. Dress is super cute, but I have to say IM IN LOVE with those shoes. Don't you dare get a different pair!

  47. I worked in boutique shoe stores for a few years, and when shoes are too big, that's when they cause the most problems, and they blister. If you have to choose between shoes that are too big or too small, you always want to err on the side of too small. That being said, consider loading your size 8s up with pads. These are what I would recommend. But these would be tres helpful too. If you have a local shoe store that will let you come in and play around with the different pads and see what works best for you, that would be your best bet.

    Hope that helps!
