Another one bites the dust

Remember when I announced that my beloved Japanese Maple was probably dead?  Well, it is.  Exactly three years after planting, outside of the two year warranty....of course!
At least all the Japanese Maples are 40% off right now, so it doesn't hurt quite that bad...but I'm still angry because I have no idea what killed it.  And my heart has been heavy over the last few weeks as I realized that my fantasic super-mums also didn't come back this year, after three years.
Nothing there now but dried up stumps.  Let this be a warning to you, do NOT cut them down in the fall!  Always wait until spring or you will lose them!  I knew I should've waited like I did the previous years....
And in related news, I think I went overboard at the garden centers today, trying to fill the void of my lost mums....
Two rose bushes, tons of annuals, a sunflower, some new planters, accent plants, vines, herbs, peppers, and a tomato plant.  I'm so behind on the veggies!  Wish me luck getting all this planted today...yikes!

  1. You are ambitious, good luck! It'll all look great. And you weren't kidding about those super-mums, they were ginormous!

  3. We had a rhododendron that died after 4 years. Turns out, it was root bound and we didn't notice until we pulled it up. That's the problem with slow growing plants.

Mums often only last a few years, so I doubt you did anything wrong.

I love, love, LOVE your mixture of flowers. I hope you plant to share the results!

  4. What a bummer about your maple! I can imagine how bad you must feel - I've been cultivating nasturtiums and sweet peas from seed for the past couple of months and every time the dog is left home alone she digs one up to spite me!
Good luck with your lovely new plants! :)

  7. Even though you are zone 5 it's very hard to keep japanese maples alive here in WI. You need to over mulch them in the winter to survive and even that may not guarantee anything. There a few varieties that do better than others up here so make sure you do your research before sinking your money into a new one.

Good luck with all your planting!

  8. Ugh, I'm sorry to hear about your losses! Especially that maple... how bizarre! Is that the one from your header photo? We have a bloodgood maple in front of our house and it's looking pretty bad right now. All dark brown-ish and crunchy leaves. We've had it for almost two years, but I'm not sure if it's going to survive either.

On a happier note, those are some delightful new flowers/veggies you have!

  9. I hate it when plants die! I feel your pain. I can't help but take it personally and feel like a failure when a plant dies under my watch...which happens all too often. Bah! Whyyy didn't I inherit my mom's super green thumb??

  11. The biggest mistake people make when planting trees is that they plant them too deep. And then mound mulch up way too high around the base. The crown of the root system should be visible. I learned that from Roger Cook, and all my trees (knock on wood) are thriving.

  12. What a bummer about the mums! Yours were the prettiest I've seen. What are the sunflower-looking plants? Is it a perennial?

  13. Sadface on the plant deaths. I'm an expert plant killer, which ends up being an expensive past time. Hope the planting went well! Can't wait to see them all in their new homes.
