Are we smart or crazy?

Last night, Shaun and I dropped 3k on a Tempur-pedic 'DeluxeBed' queen mattress set.  It is two steps above the bottom of the line, and a few steps below the 'top' bed, so it's right in the middle of the pack.  Now, after the purchase, I'm seeing all kinds of bad reviews about Tempur mattresses online.  And I'm sweating about it, literally.  The biggest complaints are that you get really hot while sleeping on it because of the way it cradles you, and that after a couple years the material sags and gets really soft underneath you, and the company won't honor the warranty unless there is a visible dip when you're NOT laying on it.  Do any of you have a Tempur-pedic, and what has your experience been?  Did anyone go for the organic latex mattress that John and Sherry at Young House Love picked out from Savvy Rest?  I must say that the only reason we would ever drop this kind of money on a mattress is because we were in absolute heaven when we tested out the Tempur-pedic mattress at the store.  For about 30 minutes we monopolized the display bed.  No joke.  He is a side sleeper, and I am a back sleeper, but both of us felt like we were being cradled in Salma Hayak's cleavage a cloud.  We were rolling around exclaiming things like, "Oh man, turn this way!"  "I know, it's so awesome!"  "Ahhh, I feel like I'm in heaven!"  "I feel like I'm floating on air!"  "This mattress set is the same price as our entire patio project!"  "I know, we're crazy!"  "We'll take it, oh and throw in two of these $100 pillows, too!"

I figured, why would we spend 3k on a patio we will only be able to use three months out of the year, but not spend the same amount on something we will sleep on every night for the next 15+ years?

Ugh, it is a ton of cash.  So now, I'm having buyers remorse and wondering if I should cancel this order before it gets delivered next Friday.  Please help me if you have any insight/opinions on the merits of Tempur-pedic!!

  2. Hi. I'm new to your blog, via DIY Diva. But I had to chime in on this. I've only slept on a Tempurpedic for one night, but it was the best night sleep I've every had. I'm hoping that I will get to buy one someday.

  3. We own one. Love, love, love it. My husband has a very bad back and he loves it. We live in Florida... it does get warm... hence big ceiling fan. I think you will love it.

  4. I wish I could offer some advice, but we just have a regular ol' mattress (boo). However, I do think your logic about spending this much money on something you use every night makes a lot of sense. And since sleep (or lack thereof) affects so many other parts of our life, it's probably worth it! Good luck... keep us posted!

  5. Sorry, I don't know anything about tempur-pedics. I think it's worth the cost if you sleep better and it looks like there are some positive reviews out there too. Good luck!

  7. Hmm. I've never slept on one, but I did get a memory foam topper once, and it was awful. I don't know if it's because it was just a 4" topper and not the real thing, or if I'm just not a memory foam kinda gal, but it made my back hurt and I gave it to my brother. I don't think he uses it anymore either. Do they let you try it out for a few days in case you hate it? As far as the money goes, you're right: if it's in your budget, it's worth it for something you use for 1/3 of your life. I hope you like it!

  9. We have a king size. We bought it summer '07 and it has already been replaced once. It is a top of the line with pillow top. They will replace it when there is more than an inch or so of sag when no one is lying in it. It is already sagging that much again. It is hot, and there are a lot of fumes when you first get it. On the other hand, it feels great, is very very comfortable, and was wonderful while I was pregnant. I would not buy another one of these beds, and wish I had known more about them when we bought this one. I would have opted for a top of the line organic mattress or spent the $5K elsewhere.

  10. I don't own a Tempur-pedic mattress, but that's the type of mattress that my chiropractor recommends. He and his wife have had theirs for several years and they love it. I know this opinion is a bit after the fact as I'm browsing through old posts, but a quality mattress is an investment in your current health and possibly even future health.

  11. Found your blog today via Young House Love. I have never tried a Tempur-pedic, but we do have a new organic latex mattress and love it. I believe we paid 2K for a king-size. Hope yours works out great for you!!!

  12. Hi Sara,

I just found your blog from your reader redesign -- great patio -- on This Young House.

My husband and I bought a Tempur-pedic mattress 5 years ago and I am so thankful that we did -- every single night and morning. We love it. I am downright evangelical about it, and encourage friends to lie down on it, and then get one for themselves. We haven't had any trouble with sagging, and I weigh 200 pounds and my side of the bed is as firm as ever.

Yes, it is hot to begin with, but either we got used to it, or it gets cooler over time, because I never notice that anymore. On really cold nights, the mattress is hard and cold until your body heat warms it up, and then you'll never want to get out.

    Hope you love it!
    Caroline
