'No pine cone' zone

When it comes to holiday decor, I suck.  Everyone out on the home/decor blogs is doing all these glittery, bling-bling, leafy, pine-coney decor posts, and I just can't get into it.  I really don't like clutter or 'tablescapes' because I'm a practical girl.  I get annoyed when I can't fit platters of food or see my guests across the table because I've got bowls of pine cones, tree branches, or gigantic glass hurricanes filled with doodads in the way.  Or when I have to take a swiffer to these things when they aren't on the table.  Don't get me wrong, these things can be really beautiful.  I just don't like spending time on beautifulness that isn't also functional and useful.  I think that is why I (and the man, actually) have a crazy obsession with candles and buy them by the truckload.  I also have a major aversion to fake greenery, leaves, potpourri, vines, etc.....see the 'swiffer' comment above.
We are hosting Thanksgiving again this year, and again my table will look a lot like this:

Check out the old chandy, molding on the walls incomplete, china cabinet doors MIA, no rug, etc.  I guess my dining room has come a long way since then!  This table setting may seem boring, but at Thanksgiving I don't really need anything more than plates, napkins and a little candlelight.  Oh, and silverware.  And the food!  And some wine.  And ice cream.  And pumpkin pie.  Preferably those last two will come together.  Yummm

  1. We always have to take the centerpieces off our table before we have dinner, so I understand. I tend to focus more on decorating our living room because I don't have to always move things around.

    Btw, love your curtains!!

  2. the thing you missed was FAMILY ... way better than decorations!!!

No one is going to notice missing doors and incomplete mouldings ... they are coming to visit you, the rest of the family .... and EAT!

    btw ... LOVE your drapes.

  3. For Thanksgiving, I think that the dishes fill the table anyways. It's always fun to dream up fun settings though :).

  4. Oh yeah, for what I lack in decorative items, I more than make up in unnecessary selections of plates, napkins, napkin rings, placemats and table runners! I guess we all have our 'thing!'

  6. I love the china cabinet in the corner - so much open storage (I'm jealous!). And I am totally with you on the ice cream and pumpkin pie. Pretty much the best part of Thanksgiving in my humble opinion!

  7. I don't blame you! I don't usually over-do it on the glittery, bling-bling decorations either (my husband isn't a fan of glitter for one thing, plus it can rub off and get everywhere). Especially on the table, maybe just a simple candle centerpiece or something. You're totally right... when it comes to the holidays, the food is the only eye candy you need!

  8. I was going to say that I like the open shelving in your dining room (I still do) but then I looked at your dining room NOW and I love those glass doors! And I like your simple table a lot.

  9. I don't go overboard with holiday decor either. I do have some new Christmas decor to put out this year, but as far as fall/thanksgiving I have nothing!

  10. I just have to say that your table is one of my favorite setups I've seen yet! I'm so not the blingy kind of girl either. I can appreciate it, but I have a more simple style. I do like bold prints for fabrics, but I don't like ornate and intricate things.

I absolutely love your table runner! And I love how your table has an unexpected modern twist with the candles and plates. Love it!

  11. I couldn't agree with you more. I love the way the decorated tables look - but I can't figure out how to fit that and tons of food on one table. By the way I adore your drapes SO nice! Lovely room!
